43 Trapped In Bangkok
At least 43 people were trapped after a 30-storey under construction skyscraper in Bangkok collapsed in the aftermath of the 7.7 magnitude earthquake that sent ripples in several countries in south and southeast Asia including Thailand, China, Bangladesh, and India. The building, located in the north of the Thai capital was reduced to a tangle of rubble and twisted metal in seconds, reported AFP. A dramatic video, being widely shared on social media, shows the the multistory building with a crane on top collapsing into a cloud of dust.

The epicentre of the quake was located in the central city of Mandalay in Myanmar, about 50km east of the city of Monywa, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS). The tremors forced people to rush out of their buildings, houses and offices in both the countries.
Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra said the authorities have declared a state of emergency in Bangkok, reported The Guardian.
However, Deputy PM Anutin Charnvirakul said the situation in Bangkok remains serious but no state of emergency had been declared. In view of the natural calamity, The Thailand Stock Exchange suspended all trading activities for the afternoon session on Friday
4 Bodies Found In Myanmar
In Myanmar, a witness told Reuters that four bodies have been found so far in Taungnoo town, south of epicentre Mandalay after parts of Kandaw mosque collapsed just before Friday prayers started.
“We got four bodies so far. There can be more. We are arranging the rescues and funeral now. The collapsed happened right before the prayer. People ran out. Some couldn’t,” the witness told Reuters.
There has been no official word on the damage caused by the earthquake in Myanmar which is currently in the middle of civil war.
A Myanmar Fire Services Department official told Reuters: “We have started the search and going around Yangon to check for casualties and damage. So far, we have no information yet.”
Tremors Felt In Bangladesh, Kolkata
The tremors sent ripples far and wide with effect being felt in Bangladesh, China, and India. The quake was felt in the parts of Bangladesh including Dhaka and Chattogram and while mild tremors were felt in Kolkata and Imphal in India as well.
Strong tremors were felt across many places in China’s Yunnan Province, bordering Myanmar, reported Global Times. The Chinese Embassy in Myanar said they are closely following the situation and currently have no further specific information.
