Islamabad United displayed their batting and bowling brilliance in Rawalpindi on Sunday night, defeating Peshawar Zalmi by 102 runs in a one-sided affair. Riding on Sahibzada Farhan’s sensational century, United posted a total of 243/5, the highest of this PSL season.
Opting to bat first on a surface that had immense help for batters, United had a disappointing start with the dismissal of Andries Gous for a two-ball duck. Following this, Farhan wasted no time in tearing apart Zalmi’s attack, targeting young Ali Raza, who was taken for 22 in a single over. Farhan ensured United ended up with 73 runs in the powerplay.
Colin Munro played second fiddle at first but went all out towards the mid-innings. Sufiyan Muqeem, who was the pick of Zalmi’s bowlers in the previous games, couldn’t stop the United batters as he was smashed for 32 in his last two overs. Farhan brought up his hundred off just 49 balls, lacing his innings with 13 boundaries and five sixes.
Although Zalmi finally picked the wickets of Farhan and Munro in quick succession, the damage was still not over. The lower middle-order cameos from Azam Khan, Salman Agha, Jason Holder, and Ben Dwarshuis ensured United scored 80 runs in the final six overs, finishing on 243/5.
In reply, Zalmi skipper Babar Azam (1) perished early after being caught at first slip off Dwarshuis in the very first over. Mitchell Owen and Saim Ayub followed in quick succession, and by the end of the fourth over, Zalmi were struggling at 26 for 3.
Mohammad Haris, however, showed some fight. His 47-ball 87 gave his side some hope. However, Imad Wasim was brilliant with the ball, dismissing Owen, Tom Kohler-Cadmore, and eventually Haris himself. Shadab Khan and Naseem Shah played their parts, while Saad Masood picked up the wicket of George Linde to complete a thoroughly dominant bowling display. Dwarshuis returned to finish things off, as Zalmi were bundled out for 141 in 18.2 overs.
