Pune police on Sunday said that the 22-year old data scientist, who filed a police complaint that she was allegedly raped by a man posing as a delivery agent at her flat in the city, fabricated the story to mislead the cops.
Calling it a “false complaint,” Police Commissioner Amitesh Kumar said that the woman made false allegations to defame the city and portray it as unsafe for women. “It was found that the woman had filed a false complaint. Her complaint misled the Pune Police.”
“Just two days ago, an incident came before Pune City Police, which was used to create a narrative that law and order concerning women in Pune has completely collapsed, and efforts were made to portray Pune as unsafe for women. By deploying the full resources of the police administration, we solved the case within 24 hours… No one should try to defame Pune, a city known to be one of the safest, through fake narratives,” Pune CP Amitesh Kumar added.
In her complaint, the IT professional had alleged that a stranger posing as a courier delivery man forcefully entered her house in Kondhwa area, bolted the door, and sprayed a chemical on her before sexually assaulting her. She even claimed that the man took a selfie using her phone in which her back and a part of his face were visible, and left a message threatening to upload her image if she would report the assault to police.
Detained Man Released, Asked To Cooperate With Police
Two days after the alleged incident, police detained a man who was suspected to be the accused. During interrogation, it came to the fore that the man was an IT professional himself and an old friend of the woman.
Moreover, it was revealed that the woman knew he was coming over and that he did not pose as a delivery agent to gain entry into her house. It was also revealed that the woman took the photo herself and drafted the threat message as well. “There was no forced entry, and no spray was used. He was known to the victim,” Kumar had said.
In a recent development, the police said that the woman said during questioing that she has an unstable mental condition, which prompted her to make the false complaint.
Meanwhile, the man detained by the police has been released. Police have served him a notice, asking him to cooperate with the investigation and be available whenever the probe warrants his appearance.
