Sunil Gavaskar to get life-sized statue at Wankhede Stadium| CricTracker

Legendary batter Sunil Gavaskar will be honoured with a life-sized statue at the iconic Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai. The statue will be unveiled at the opening of Mumbai Cricket Association’s Sharad Pawar Cricket Museum, which will be inaugurated very soon. Gavaskar, for the veteran servant of Indian cricket that he is, a statue will only do justice to take his recognition a step further.

Sharad Pawar, a former ICC president and a prominent BCCI and MCA figure, will also be honoured with a statue apart from the fact that the museum has also been named after him. Gavaskar has expressed his heartfelt gratitude to MCA, that he calls his mother, saying that he will forever be grateful. The 76-year-old has said that getting a statue is something he will cherish for the rest of his life.

“I am deeply touched and tremendously honoured that my mother Cricket Association has decided to have a statue of mine at the entrance of the new MCA Sharad Pawar Cricket museum at the Wankhede Stadium. I will forever be grateful to Mumbai Cricket Association for holding my hand as I took my first steps in the game and to the BCCI for then giving me the opportunity to spread my wings and fulfil the dream of representing my country in the sport. It’s an honour which I will cherish for whatever is the rest of my life,” Gavaskar told via an MCA release.

The state association’s president Ajinkya Naik has said that the statue of the exemplary India cricketer will serve as a symbol of the excellence and determination with which he took the field during his active days as a cricketer. He further believes that the Gavaskar statue will act as a source of inspiration for the upcoming generation of cricket lovers.

“The MCA Sharad Pawar Cricket Museum is our heartfelt tribute to the stalwarts of Mumbai cricket and a testament to the visionary leadership of Sharad Pawar.
