Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin on February 9 described the inauguration of Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Jaguar Land Rover’s new manufacturing facility in Ranipet as a “golden day” for the state, marking a major boost to its position as India’s automobile and electric vehicle hub. The greenfield plant, developed at the SIPCOT complex in Panapakkam with an investment of Rs 9,000 crore, is expected to manufacture both internal combustion engine and electric vehicles for domestic and global markets, while creating thousands of jobs and attracting a new wave of ancillary industries.
Stalin said the Tata Group’s decision to invest in Ranipet reflects strong confidence in Tamil Nadu’s industrial ecosystem and governance model, adding that the state aims to convert investment commitments into real projects on the ground.
A major industrial milestone for Tamil Nadu
Calling the day historic, Stalin said the launch of the Tata Motors–Jaguar Land Rover facility strengthens Tamil Nadu’s long-standing relationship with the Tata Group. He highlighted the state’s role as a leading manufacturing destination, especially in automobiles and electric mobility.
“Tamil Nadu is India’s automobile manufacturing hub and also a major centre for electric vehicles,” Stalin said, adding that Tata’s entry into Ranipet further expands the state’s industrial footprint beyond Chennai into tier-two towns.
The Chief Minister also pointed out that the world-famous Land Rover brand is now being manufactured in the state, with the first vehicle officially rolling out from the new plant.
Rs 9,000 crore greenfield project with global ambitions
The Tata Jaguar Land Rover manufacturing facility has been developed as a greenfield unit powered entirely by renewable energy. The facility can turn out about 2.5 lakh vehicles a year, serving customers in India as well as overseas markets. The project also carries strategic weight, coming at a time when India is deepening trade links with Europe and the US and Tamil Nadu is emerging as a key manufacturing hub for global carmakers.
Tata Sons Chairman Natarajan Chandrasekaran, who attended the inauguration, called it a landmark moment not just for the company but for India’s presence in luxury vehicle manufacturing.
“With the opening of the Ranipet plant, India is officially added to the global industrial map for Jaguar Land Rover,” he said.
Chandrasekaran recalled that Stalin laid the foundation stone of the project just 16 months ago and had urged the company to begin manufacturing quickly, promising full government cooperation.
He said the plant will follow a three-phase expansion plan over the next four years, eventually scaling up to produce between 2.5 lakh and 3 lakh vehicles annually.
Jobs, ancillaries, and regional development push
Tamil Nadu Industries Minister TRB Rajaa said the facility is expected to generate 5,000 direct jobs, with even greater employment potential through ancillary units that will develop around the plant.
He noted that the project is part of Tamil Nadu’s distributed development strategy, aimed at spreading high-tech manufacturing beyond established industrial centres.
Rajaa also credited the state’s skill development programmes for preparing local youth to take up roles at the new facility, adding that the workforce has been recruited from across Tamil Nadu.
Stalin urges more Tata investments in R&D and future sectors
Stalin used the occasion to invite Tata Group to expand further in Tamil Nadu, particularly in research and development, innovation-led manufacturing, and emerging sectors.
He reiterated that Tamil Nadu’s governance model focuses not only on signing investment MoUs but also ensuring their execution, adding that the state will soon host another major investors’ conclave to attract more global commitments.
“We want Tamil Nadu to be the first choice for investment,” Stalin said, assuring full support to industries that choose the state as their base.
