Playback singer Kalpana Raghavendar refuted reports claiming she attempted suicide at her Hyderabad residence on Wednesday. She clarified to the police that she had taken an overdose of insomnia medication due to sleeplessness caused by ongoing disagreements with her daughter over her education.
Kalpana denies suicide attempt
According to the KPHB police, Kalpana Raghavendar and her husband have been living in a house in Nizampet, KPHB, for the past five years.
Kalpana told the police that on March 3, a conflict arose between her and her daughter, Daya Prasad, over her education. Kalpana wanted her daughter to study in Hyderabad, but Daya disagreed. She also mentioned that after returning from Ernakulam on March 4, she struggled to sleep despite trying to calm herself.
“I took eight tablets but was still unable to sleep. I took another 10 tablets and fell conscious. I don’t know what happened after that,” she said.

According to the police, Kalpana’s husband, Prasad, became worried when she didn’t answer his calls and asked the colony welfare members to check on her. They contacted the police, who broke open the door and found Kalpana unconscious in her bedroom. She was then taken to a nearby hospital.
Once she regained consciousness, Kalpana told the police she didn’t try to take her life. She explained that after a disagreement with her daughter about her education, she took too many sleeping pills. She also confirmed that no one else was involved in the incident.
Kalpana’s daughter later told the media at the hospital that her mother didn’t attempt suicide but had taken an overdose of sleeping pills due to stress. “Please do not manipulate any information. Our family is perfectly fine. My mom and dad are happy. I am happy. My mom is perfectly fine. She will be back in a few days,” Daya Prasad said.
