TN MPs Led By Kanimozhi Protest In Parliament Over NEP, Union Minister’s ‘Uncivilised’ Remarks

DMK MP Kanimozhi, along with other DMK MPs and alliance leaders from Tamil Nadu, staged a protest in Parliament on Tuesday against the National Education Policy (NEP), the three-language policy and Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s remarks on the issue. The demonstration was attended by prominent political figures, including Vaiko, A Raja, and Thol Thirumavalavan, who voiced strong opposition to the Centre’s policies on education and language.

During the protest, MPs held placards with slogans such as “Tamil Nadu Educates, BJP Manipulates” and “First Language, then Education, what’s next our identity?”, signaling their resistance to what they perceive as an attempt to impose Hindi on Tamil Nadu.

DMK MP Kanimozhi told ANI, “The Union Govt is withholding the money that has to be given to Tamil Nadu, saying that we have to sign the three-language policy and the NEP. They are ruining the future of the children of Tamil Nadu. They have no right to withhold the funds which have to come to the children of Tamil Nadu.”

“Yesterday, he (Dharmendra Pradhan) responded in a very abusive way, saying that we are dishonest and that the people of Tamil Nadu are uncivilised. This is not the language we expect him to be speaking. This is totally undemocratic. We expect an apology,” she said.

DMK MP Tiruchi Siva criticized Pradhan’s statement, calling it misleading and reiterating that Tamil Nadu’s Education Minister had already clarified the state’s stance. “It is misleading (statement of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan), we never said so, Tamil Nadu Education Minister already clarified it…we are wearing black today and going to have a demonstration condemning the observations made by him (Dharmendra Pradhan)…it is unethical and unparliamentary. We are also against three-language policy…nobody can impose it on us,” Tiruchi Siva told ANI.

Centre vs Tamil Nadu: The Heated Exchange

The protest comes in the wake of Union Education Minister Dharmendra Pradhan’s sharp attack on the Tamil Nadu government, where he accused the Stalin-led administration of “ruining the future of students” by opposing the three-language policy for political gains. His remarks triggered a furious response from DMK MPs, who disrupted the proceedings in Parliament, leading to an adjournment of the session.

During his reply in Parliament on the PM Schools for Rising India (PM SHRI) scheme, Pradhan also called the Tamil Nadu government “dishonest”, further escalating tensions between the Centre and the state.

Reacting swiftly, Chief Minister M K Stalin launched a scathing attack on Pradhan through social media, accusing him of acting with arrogance “as if he were a king” and demanding that he “control his tongue.” Stalin also questioned whether Prime Minister Narendra Modi endorsed such remarks, emphasising that Tamil Nadu would continue to resist any attempts to impose Hindi through education policies.
