South Africa thrashed England by emerging victorious by seven wickets with 125 deliveries to spare in Match 11 of the Champions Trophy 2025 at the National Stadium in Karachi on Saturday, March 1. With this, they joined Australia to make it to the knockout phase from Group B.
Phil Salt started off the English innings with a couple of boundaries on the second and fourth deliveries of the first over. However, Marco Jansen had the last laugh by dismissing the opener in what was yet another frenetic innings. The towering left-arm pacer effected another dismissal in his subsequent over. By the end of the 10-over mark, England were 62/3, with all three wickets snapped by Jansen.
Joe Root added crucial runs to the scoreboard along with Harry Brook. However, the dismissal of both the batters in the span of successive overs had the English five-down within the end of the 18th over. It was a classic middle overs squeeze by the Proteas who never let England get away from their reach. Jos Buttler ended up running short of partners, the skipper being the ninth wicket to fall. England ended up getting cleaned up for 179 in 38.2 overs.
Promoting Tristan Stubbs up the order did not work out well for South Africa. He was dismissed for a five-ball duck to provide Jofra Archer his first wicket of the evening. While Archer had started off proceedings quite promisingly, Saqib Mahmood did not quite apply the same pressure on the batting lineup. Despite the loss of Ryan Rickelton, whose mode of dismissal was the same as Stubbs’, South Africa were placed quite well at 58/2.
Heinrich Klaasen joined Rassie van der Dussen in the middle. Both the batters complemented each other quite well, as they inched towards the target by milking runs in the middle overs. None of the English bowlers threatened to break their stand. The 127-run stand was broken after the two batters were inches away from their target by Adil Rashid, who secured a consolation wicket for the hapless English unit.
