The Uttar Pradesh government has issued directions to close all the illegal slaughterhouses and banned the sale of meat within 500 metres of religious places ahead of the commencement of the nine-day Chaitra Navratri festival on Sunday.
Additional restrictions for Ram Navami will be enforced on April 6, during which animal slaughter and meat sales will be entirely banned, according to news agency PTI.
Amrit Abhijat, Principal Secretary of the Urban Development Department, has instructed District Magistrates, Police Commissioners, and Municipal Commissioners to immediately shut down slaughterhouses and implement the meat sale ban near religious places, the state government announced on Saturday.
Referring to the directives issued in 2014 and 2017, the Yogi Adityanath-led administration reaffirmed that illegal animal slaughter and sale of meat near religious places are strictly prohibited.
In addition, district-level committees have been formulated under the chairmanship of district magistrates to make this decision effective. The committees will be comprised of officials from the police, Animal Husbandry Department, Pollution Control Board, Transport Department, Labour Department, Health Department, and Food Safety Administration.
Ramcharitmanas Recitation To Begin From April 6 Across All Districts
Authorities have been instructed to take strict action against violators under the provisions of the UP Municipal Corporation Act of 1959 and the Food Safety Act of 2006 and 2011, the statement added. Chaitra Navratri, a Hindu festival dedicated to Goddess Durga, will begin on March 30.
Additionally, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath has announced large-scale celebrations for Chaitra Ram Navami. He has directed officials to organise a continuous 24-hour recitation (Akhand Path) of Ramcharitmanas, a sacred Hindu text, in temples across all districts, according to a report by news agency ANI.
According to a statement from the Chief Minister’s Office, the recitation will start on April 5 and conclude on April 6, coinciding with Shri Ram Navami celebrations. Arrangements are being made in temples across the state to facilitate the event, which aims to enhance the festival’s spiritual and cultural significance.
