Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar Resigns Citing Health Reasons, Says ‘Abiding By Medical Advice’

Vice President Jagdeep Dhankhar tendered his resignation on Monday, citing the need to prioritise his health and follow medical guidance. In a letter addressed to President Droupadi Murmu, Dhankhar stated, “To prioritise health care and abide by medical advice, I hereby resign as the Vice President of India, effective immediately, in accordance with Article 67(a) of the constitution.”

In his note, Dhankhar expressed his heartfelt appreciation to President Murmu for her “unwavering support” and the “soothing wonderful working relationship” during his tenure. He also conveyed gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Council of Ministers, noting that the Prime Minister’s “cooperation and support have been invaluable.”

Reflecting on his time in office, he shared, “The warmth, trust, and affection I have received from all the Hon’ble Members of Parliament would ever be cherished at and embedded in my memory.” Dhankhar described his tenure as a privilege, witnessing India’s “remarkable economic progress and unprecedented exponential development” during a transformative period.

“As I leave this esteemed office, I am filled with pride in Bharat’s global rise and phenomenal achievements and hold unwavering confidence in her brilliant future,” he concluded.

This announcement comes even as Dhankhar on July 10 said he will retire in August 2027, “subject to divine intervention”. Addressing an event at Jawaharlal Nehru University (JNU) in New Delhi, he said, “I will retire at the right time, August 2027, subject to divine intervention,” news agency PTI reported.

Dhankhar Appeals for Constructive Politics in Parliament

Before stepping down, Dhankhar presided over the opening of the Monsoon session of Parliament as Rajya Sabha Chairman. During his address, he made a strong plea for an end to constant political confrontation, urging lawmakers to uphold the spirit of healthy debate without resorting to personal attacks.

“A thriving democracy cannot sustain constant political acrimony,” Dhankhar remarked, appealing to all parties to engage in respectful and constructive dialogue for national progress. He stressed that conflict undermines the core of Indian politics and emphasised the importance of civility and mutual respect, both within Parliament and in public discourse.

“Political tension must be reduced, as confrontation is not the essence of politics. While political parties may pursue the same goals through different approaches, no one in India opposes the nation’s interests,” he said, underlining the need for unity.

Emphasising that “dialogue and discussion, not conflict, are the way forward,” he warned that internal discord only benefits the country’s adversaries.

“India’s historical strength lies in discourse, dialogue, and deliberation, which should guide our Parliament,” Dhankhar said, highlighting the democratic values he championed throughout his vice-presidential tenure.

Dhankhar’s Recent Health Concerns, Hospitalisation

Dhankhar’s resignation follows a period of health-related concerns. In March, he was admitted to AIIMS Delhi after experiencing chest discomfort. He resumed his duties as Rajya Sabha Chairman shortly after being discharged.

In a press note dated March 12, AIIMS Delhi stated, “The Hon’ble Vice-President of India Shri Jagdeep Dhankhar, was admitted to All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) New Delhi on 9th March 2025, following cardiac-related ailments. After receiving necessary care by the medical team at AIIMS, he made satisfactory recovery and was discharged on 12th March, 2025. He has been advised to take adequate rest for the next few days.”

Congress’s Chief Whip in the Rajya Sabha, Jairam Ramesh, had visited Dhankhar at his residence in March and noted that he was recovering well. “Glad that he has recovered speedily and is planning to resume presiding over the Rajya Sabha from Monday,” Ramesh posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Expressing appreciation for the care he received, Dhankhar had written on X, “Deeply appreciate the exemplary care and professionalism of the medical team at AIIMS, New Delhi, from my admission on March 9 to discharge on March 12… Your thoughtful gestures have been truly heartening.”
