People in Bengaluru were taken by surprise on Sunday morning after British singer Ed Sheeran began an impromptu performance on Church Street in the city. 

With a guitar in his hand, the global music sensation started singing on a footpath without any prior announcement, quickly drawing a crowd. 

However, a surprise was waiting for Ed as well after Bengaluru police personnel stepped in and disconnected his microphone. In a video that has now gone viral, a police personnel is seen disconnecting the microphone as Ed sang his popular ‘Shape of You’ song. 

According to Hindustan Times, the police officers on duty had failed to recognise the singer and instructed him to stop the performance since he did not have necessary permissions. 

The police said that permission was requested but not granted, reported India Today. 

The 33-year-old Grammy Award winner is on an India tour and is currently in Bengaluru for his scheduled concert. As part of his tour, he is also slated to perform in Pune, Shillong, and Delhi-NCR. 

In Bengaluru, he will take the stage twice on consecuitve days as a special arrangement has been made due to overwhelming demand for tickets. 

He has already performed a show in Hyderabad and Chennai. Legendary composer AR Rahman joined Sheeran on stage during the Chennai concert as the two performed a rendition of the classic ‘Urvashi’ song.

The global music icon had expressed his excitement about performing in India saying he always looks forward to returning as Indian audience have shown immense love for his music. 

“Every time I come back to India, it feels even more thrilling,” he said reflecting on his past visits. 

“Back in 2014, I had no idea my music had such a strong following here. It wasn’t until my visit in 2015 that I realized how much people truly enjoy my songs. Today, it’s clear that India is one of my biggest markets,” he said.
