The 18th edition of the Indian Premier League (IPL) was suspended for a week on Friday, May 9, in light of the growing tension between India and Pakistan. This decision came after Thursday’s clash between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals was stopped mid-way due to a significant technical failure.
IPL chairman Arun Dhumal said that it did not make much sense to continue with the tournament. He also revealed that full suspension of the remainder of the season was being considered.
“See, given the situation as of now, we thought it appropriate that it does not make sense to have the tournament going on for a while, and as the situation unfolds in the coming days, accordingly will take a call,” Arun Dhumal told CNN-News18.
“We were considering (full suspension) and we were discussing with all the stakeholders and it was thought appropriate to suspend for a week, assess the situation and then take a final call,” he added.
Dhumal said that the situation will be monitored over the coming days, and a final decision regarding the resumption of the league will be taken after discussions with all the stakeholders.
“See as of now, as you know, the entire country is focused on winning this war and we want to show our solidarity with our armed forces and with our government. So that is the focus as of now, we are not considering everything else as of now. So, we will review the situation and accordingly, take a call after discussing with all the stakeholders,” he added.
After the clash between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals was abandoned, only 16 matches are left in IPL 2025. This includes 12 league matches, Qualifier 1 and 2, Eliminator, and the Final. Gujarat Titans are placed at the top of the points table, while Sunrisers Hyderabad, Rajasthan Royals, and Chennai Super Kings have already been eliminated. On Friday, Lucknow Super Giants and Royal Challengers Bengaluru were set to lock horns. However, the match has been postponed for now.
