Australia’s Tim David made headlines during the third T20I against the West Indies at Warner Park, St Kitts, smashing the fastest T20I hundred ever recorded by an Aussie in just 37 balls. However, after David reached the milestone, he revealed using a bat of West Indies veteran Andre Russell, who retired from international T20s after the second game of the series.
Australia chased down a target of 215 in just 16.1 overs, sealing the five-match series 3-0 with a comfortable six-wicket win. While Shai Hope’s maiden T20I ton earlier in the evening had given hopes of the home team winning the game, David’s heroics sealed the win. David’s 100* off 37 balls became the fastest T20I century by an Australian after surpassing Josh Inglis’ 43-ball ton in 2023.
“I’ve been carrying that Dre Russ bat around for a year and it felt like it was the best time to use it.I’ve spent a lot of time working on power hitting but now I’m working on my shot selection,” David said in the post-match presentation ceremony.
Warner Park is a great place to bat: Tim David
Having played in the Caribbean Premier League (CPL), David is well versed with the Warner Park conditions and used that experience to his advantage. He brought up his half-century in just 16 balls, also a national record, and hammered 11 sixes in his inning. Meanwhile, Mitchell Owen, playing just his third international match, partnered with David. The duo put together a 128-run stand for the fifth wicket off just 46 balls. Owen played a handy cameo of 36 off 16. Together, they ensured Australia crossed the line with 23 balls to spare.
“I was just having a great time in the middle playing for Australia. It was nice to have a period at home and get my body right. I didn’t think I would get the opportunity to get a hundred for Australia so I’m stoked. The pitch was good and small boundaries, so you have to back your strengths. Warner Park is a great place to bat and it was great to have experience here in the CPL,” David added.
Earlier, Hope, who hit 100 off 55 balls, became only the second West Indian after Chris Gayle to score centuries across all formats. He shared a 125-run opening partnership with Brandon King, helping the hosts post 214/4.
