The rain once again played spoilsport at the ICC Women’s World Cup 2025, as the 19th match between Pakistan Women and New Zealand Women at Colombo’s R. Premadasa Stadium was abandoned without a result. This became the fourth game of the tournament to be washed out, and all four have been in Colombo, which has been severely affected by constant showers.

With this result, South Africa became the second team to qualify for the semifinals, joining Australia. Pakistan’s semifinal hopes are virtually over, while New Zealand’s path to the knockouts has become even tougher.

There was no result as rain had the final say yet again. After multiple interruptions throughout the day, the contest was reduced to 36 overs per team, and Pakistan managed 92/5 in 25 overs before rain returned. Despite several attempts by the groundsmen to make the field playable, the game was finally called off, leading to both teams sharing a point each.

For Pakistan, it was another frustrating day. Captain Fatima Sana had hoped to put up a strong total after choosing to bat first, but her team once again struggled. New Zealand’s bowlers were all over the opposition batters, managing to pick five wickets under 20 overs and leaking just 92 runs.

Pakistan’s top order failed early, but Aliya Riaz was the only one who put up a fight as she scored 28 off 52 balls*, laced by three boundaries. Earlier, Muneeba Ali (22 off 26) also contributed with the bat.

New Zealand’s pacer Lea Tahuhu once again led from the front, taking 2 for 20 in six overs, including wickets of Sidra Amin and Omaima Sohail. Jess Kerr, Eden Carson, and Amelia Kerr chipped in with one wicket each.

What’s next?

With the match ending without a result, both Pakistan and New Zealand gained one point each. Pakistan, still without a win in the tournament, now has just two points from five matches and is effectively out of semifinal contention. Meanwhile, New Zealand holds the fifth spot with four points to its name. Pakistan will be next in action on October 21 against South Africa in Colombo. On the other hand, the Sophie Devine-led team will play India on October 23 in Navi Mumbai.
