US President Donald Trump on Monday criticised Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy for stating that end of Russia’s war against Ukraine is still likely ‘very, very far away.’
In a post on Truth Social , Trump wrote, “This is the worst statement that could have been made by Zelenskyy, and America will not put up with it for much longer! It is what I was saying, this guy doesn’t want there to be Peace as long as he has America’s backing and, Europe, in the meeting they had with Zelenskyy, stated flatly that they cannot do the job without the U.S. – Probably not a great statement to have been made in terms of a show of strength against Russia. What are they thinking?”
Zelensky’s remarks came after heated exchange with Trump in the White House. The AP reported that when Zelenskyy was asked by a reporter to comment about the outlines of a new European initiative to end Russia’s war, he said, “We are talking about the first steps today, and therefore, until they are on paper, I would not like to talk about them in great detail.”
“An agreement to end the war is still very, very far away, and no one has started all these steps yet. The peace that we foresee in the future must be just, honest, and most importantly, sustainable,” he added.
What Happened At Oval Office Meeting?
Earlier, Trump and JD Vance criticised Zelenskyy during a tense Oval Office meeting on Friday, accusing him of being ‘disrespectful’ while he sought security guarantees from the United States amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. Trump rebuked Zelenskyy for pushing for US security commitments, telling him, “You’ve got to be more thankful,” and warning that he was “gambling with World War III.”
The remarks came after Zelenskyy expressed distrust in Russian President Vladimir Putin’s promises of peace, arguing that Putin has a history of breaking ceasefire agreements. The exchange turned confrontational when Zelenskyy questioned the kind of diplomacy Vance was advocating, pointing out that Putin had repeatedly violated past agreements, AP reported.
JD Vance, one of the administration’s most skeptical voices on Ukraine, then accused Zelenskyy of debating Trump in front of the American media. “Have you said ‘thank you’ once?” Vance asked. The tension escalated as Vance reacted angrily, accusing Zelenskyy of organising “propaganda tours.”
