Anupriya Nagar: From a UK Economics Classroom to a Global Indian Spiritual Story

At 21, University of Bath economics student Anupriya Nagar became a producer of Hanuman Ansh, a devotional film inspired by Neem Karoli Baba. What makes her story especially relevant to the Indian diaspora is not simply the film’s extraordinary commercial performance, but how a young Indian studying in Britain brought an Indian spiritual narrative back into mainstream cinema—and is now positioning it for audiences beyond India.

From economics to cinema

Anupriya Nagar’s route into Indian cinema is unusually international.

She was studying economics at the University of Bath in the United Kingdom when an academic project unexpectedly brought her closer to the world of filmmaking. By 21, she had become one of the producers of Hanuman Ansh, a Hindi feature inspired by the life and teachings of spiritual figure Neem Karoli Baba. The film was released in India in August 2026.

The conventional path into Bollywood usually runs through film schools, production houses, acting, writing or family connections within the industry.

Nagar arrived from somewhere else: economics, university life in Britain, art and a growing interest in spirituality.

That makes her story particularly relevant to Doonited Overseas. It is not simply another young Indian success story. It is an example of how the Indian diaspora generation can absorb ideas abroad and then use that international experience to reinterpret Indian culture for contemporary audiences.

The unusual economics of a film gamble

According to reporting by Hindustan Times, Nagar invested money she had accumulated from three years of part-time work in the UK into Hanuman Ansh. She had no previous filmmaking experience and had even secured a job in Zurich before returning to India in 2025 and becoming involved with the project.

Later reporting by Mint provided another important piece of context: Nagar joined the production after filming had already been completed, when the team needed funds to complete post-production.

That distinction matters.

It would be misleading to describe her as someone who independently financed and made an entire feature film from scratch. The publicly available production credits list Nagar alongside Ragini Sona, Namrata G. Singh and director Vishal Chaturvedi as producers.

Her contribution nevertheless appears to have been an important financial and production commitment at a critical stage.

And the commercial result has been extraordinary.

Hanuman Ansh opened modestly, with India Today reporting a first-day collection of around ₹10 lakh and an India gross of more than ₹72 crore by early September, based on Sacnilk figures.

By early October, however, the film had moved into a completely different commercial category. Recent reports put its worldwide gross above ₹400 crore, with The Times of India reporting ₹424.24 crore worldwide by its 60th day in theatres.

The precise box-office figures vary by tracker and reporting date, so the safer conclusion is that the film has become one of the most unexpected commercial successes of 2026 rather than relying on one particular cumulative number.

Why Neem Karoli Baba—and why now?

The film is inspired by Neem Karoli Baba, the spiritual teacher associated particularly with Kainchi Dham in Uttarakhand.

The subject itself has an international dimension.

Neem Karoli Baba became known outside India partly through Western seekers and devotees. His global association includes people who encountered Indian spirituality through travel, ashram culture, yoga and broader countercultural movements.

Nagar has spoken about precisely this paradox.

In an interview reported by Hindustan Times, she said she wanted to introduce Neem Karoli Baba’s story to a younger generation and noted that she herself first learned about him through a foreigner.

That observation offers a particularly interesting diaspora angle.

An Indian student living in Britain discovered an Indian spiritual figure through an international cultural circuit and then helped bring that story into Indian cinema for a younger Indian audience.

It is almost a reverse cultural exchange.

For decades, India has exported yoga, meditation, Ayurveda, Indian food, music and spirituality to the world. In Nagar’s case, the global exposure appears to have helped her look back at India with fresh eyes.

A British education, an Indian story

Nagar’s own account describes her as an economist, artist and storyteller. Her official biography says she was born in Mumbai, moved to Britain to study economics at Bath and developed an interest in art from an early age. She says she held her first group art exhibition at 12 and later became involved in university art and dance societies. Anupriya Nagar

Her experience in Britain was not limited to academics.

At the University of Bath, she was involved in Raise and Give, a student fundraising initiative, and says she helped raise £10,000 for charity. She has also described volunteering with the British Heart Foundation and fundraising connected with cancer patients in Mumbai.

She also participated in Bollywood dance in Britain, with her team winning a head-to-head award at Just Bollywood 2022 while raising funds for Indian charitable organisations.

These experiences provide a more useful picture of her diaspora identity than simply calling her a young film producer.

She is part of a generation that can move between Indian cultural identity and Western educational and professional environments without treating them as contradictory.

The film’s global ambition

The producers are not presenting Hanuman Ansh solely as an Indian domestic product.

Swambhu Media Network describes the project as intended for a global audience and explicitly highlights international distribution and opportunities to take the story beyond traditional theatrical markets. Swambhu Media Network

The film has also had a U.S. distribution presence through Prathyangira Cinemas, according to Moviebuff’s production and distribution listing. Moviebuff.com

That matters because devotional cinema can travel differently from conventional Bollywood.

A mainstream Hindi action or romance film may depend heavily on language familiarity, celebrity recognition and Indian popular culture.

A spiritual story can potentially cross those boundaries if the central themes—service, compassion, faith, purpose and the search for meaning—are communicated effectively.

That does not automatically make Hanuman Ansh a global hit. International audiences, distribution and long-term streaming performance will ultimately determine whether its global ambitions translate into sustained cultural reach.

But the business opportunity is clear.

The Indian diaspora provides an existing audience across Britain, North America, the Gulf, Southeast Asia, Australia and elsewhere. Beyond that audience, Indian spirituality already has a substantial international following.

The Gen Z question

Perhaps the most interesting part of Nagar’s story is the age of the producer.

At 21, she belongs to a generation raised with Instagram, YouTube, streaming platforms and global cultural exchange.

That generation does not necessarily encounter Indian spirituality through traditional religious institutions.

It may encounter it through a podcast, a foreign travel creator, a wellness community, a musician, a documentary—or a film.

That creates an opportunity for Indian cultural storytelling, but it also creates a challenge.

Young audiences are unlikely to respond simply because a film tells them that something is culturally important. The storytelling has to work on its own terms.

Hanuman Ansh‘s box-office performance suggests that there is at least a substantial audience willing to engage with devotional cinema when the subject and presentation connect.

Its extraordinary word-of-mouth growth is arguably more interesting than its opening.

A film that begins modestly and then develops a large audience indicates that audience discovery can increasingly happen outside the traditional Bollywood publicity machine.

Success also brings responsibility

The success has already produced another consequence: renewed interest in Kainchi Dham.

Recent reports have described substantial crowds visiting the Uttarakhand site associated with Neem Karoli Baba following the film’s success. The film’s director has urged devotees to behave responsibly amid concerns about overcrowding.

This is an important reminder that cultural storytelling can have real-world effects.

A successful film can influence tourism, pilgrimage, local businesses and community life. For sacred sites, however, sudden popularity can also create pressure on infrastructure, residents and the environment.

That responsibility becomes even greater when a spiritual story is marketed internationally.

What Anupriya Nagar’s story means for the diaspora

There is a tendency to define diaspora success through technology founders, doctors, investment bankers and corporate executives.

Nagar represents a different category.

She demonstrates how an overseas education can become a cultural bridge.

She studied economics in Britain, developed her professional and philanthropic experiences there, travelled internationally and then returned to participate in an Indian film project centred on a spiritual figure whose influence itself crosses national boundaries.

Her story therefore sits at the intersection of Indian culture, global education, youth entrepreneurship and international storytelling.

The larger lesson is not that every overseas Indian student should abandon a conventional career and enter filmmaking.

It is that diaspora identity can create unusual combinations.

An economist can become a producer.
A British university experience can sharpen an Indian cultural perspective.
A story rooted in Uttarakhand can find audiences among Indians living thousands of kilometres away.
And a 21-year-old can enter an industry without following its traditional career ladder.

The real test for Nagar will now be what comes next.

One successful film can be a remarkable breakthrough. Building a sustainable production career is much harder.

If she can turn the attention generated by Hanuman Ansh into films that are commercially viable, culturally responsible and genuinely accessible to international audiences, her achievement could become more than a box-office surprise.

It could become an example of a new kind of Indian global storyteller—one who discovers India partly through the world, then tells India’s stories back to both India and the world.

The more meaningful story is how diaspora experience can change the way a young Indian sees Indian culture.

Nagar’s years in Britain appear to have given her an international frame through which she returned to an Indian spiritual subject. That is increasingly important as the Indian diaspora becomes younger and more culturally hybrid.

India’s cultural influence abroad is no longer driven only by established institutions. It is also being carried by students, creators, entrepreneurs and second-generation professionals who can translate between cultural worlds.

The next challenge is credibility. If Indian spiritual cinema wants a lasting international audience, it must go beyond religious familiarity and deliver strong filmmaking, nuanced storytelling and responsible representation. Hanuman Ansh‘s commercial performance shows that the audience may already be there.
