‘Constructive criticism is fair and necessary but online abuse is not’ – Shikha Pandey slams haters after India’s defeat to South Africa

India have made things difficult for themselves after losing to South Africa by six wickets on Sunday, June 21, at Old Trafford, Manchester, in match No. 18 of the Women’s T20 World Cup 2026. Harmanpreet Kaur and Co. started their campaign in the marquee event with convincing wins over Pakistan and the Netherlands. However, the defeat against South Africa has dented their hopes of reaching the semi-finals.

The Women in Blue have been subjected to online hate and trolls after the disappointing result against the Proteas. India were in a position of strength at the end of the power play in the second innings as South Africa had reached 25/2 while chasing a 159-run target. However, Marizanne Kapp broke Indian hearts with a scintillating knock of 81 not out off 45 deliveries to take her team home.

Indian right-arm pacer Shikha Pandey, however, called out the trolls and said that while constructive criticism is fair and necessary, online abuse is unacceptable.

“To all those going after the Indian players after today’s loss to South Africa- constructive criticism is fair and necessary but online abuse is not. The difference between the two is immense, and it’s important we don’t blur that line,” Pandey wrote on his official ‘X’ (formerly Twitter) handle.

India are placed second on Group A only behind Australia. However, South Africa are expected to win their last two games against the Netherlands and Bangladesh, finishing on eight points. In that case, India will have to beat Bangladesh and Australia in their last two matches in the group stage. The Women’s ODI World Cup champions will have to bounce back strongly on Thursday, June 25, when they take on their neighbours.
