‘She Could’ve Shouted’: Pune Bus Rape Accused’s Lawyer Claims ‘Nothing Was Done Forcefully’

The Pune bus rape accused’s lawyer claimed on Friday that “nothing was done forcefully”, adding that earlier cases against him were of robbery and not rape.

Dattatray Ramdas Gade, accused of raping a 26-year-old woman inside a state transport bus in Pune at Swargate bus station on Tuesday was produced at a city court on Friday.

Judicial Magistrate First Class Court remanded the accused to 12 days in police custody.

Speaking to reporters after the hearing, Advocate Wajid Khan, representing the accused, said that nothing was done forcefully and the woman could have shouted for held as the incident took place in the morning.

“He (Dattatray Ramdas Gade) has been sent to 12-day police custody. The earlier cases on him were of robbery, not rape. The Investigating Officer said that he is a habitual offender but he was not convicted in any of the previous cases,” he said.
“It was 5.45 am the morning (the time of the alleged incident); she could have shouted and sought help. Nothing was done forcefully,” said the defence lawyer.

The accused was nabbed from a paddy field after an extensive search operation carried out with the help of drones and sniffer dogs around midnight on Thursday in Shirur tehsil of Pune district.

The police apprised the court that Gade engaged the 26-year-old victim in conversation at the bus terminus on Tuesday morning, calling her ‘didi’ (sister) and took her to an empty ‘Shiv Shahi’ bus parked in the depot premises and raped her.
