On Saturday, June 6, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi became the youngest player to receive a call-up to the Indian team. The 15-year-old has been picked in India’s squads for the T20Is against Ireland and England and the subsequent Asian Games competition later this year.
The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has taken a great call by allowing the youngster’s parents to accompany him on the tours to Ireland and England. Sooryavanshi’s father, Sanjeev Sooryavanshi, and mother, Aarti Sooryavanshi, are expected to travel with their son as he takes his first few steps in international cricket.
Sooryavanshi’s mother, who is a homemaker, has played a key role in his son’s success. She wakes up as early as 3:00 AM every day to manage his cricket routine, schedule, and nutrition. During the Indian Premier League (IPL), the Bihar batter celebrated a few of his milestones with the “A” hand sign. It was to honour the sacrifices her mother made to make him the player he is today.
Sooryavanshi’s father has also been one of the main pillars behind his son’s glory. From selling his farmland to travelling hundreds of kilometres multiple times a week for practice, Sanjeev did everything he could for the betterment of his son.
Sooryavanshi isn’t new to travelling abroad. In fact, he is currently in Sri Lanka with the India A team. He is preparing for a tri-nation series involving India A, Afghanistan A, and Sri Lanka A. However, being a part of the Indian team has different challenges and having his parents alongside him will make his initiation at the highest level much smoother.
“Vaibhav’s performances – he almost forced us to pick him. I know he’s young, but two IPLs in a row, and we also know what he did at the Under-19 level…we can all see the kind of talent he has. We’re hopeful if and when he gets an opportunity, he shows the same ability. There will be tougher challenges but he has shown great promise and temperament. We’re all as hopeful as everyone is. He has picked himself through his own performances,” said Agarkar in a press conference after announcing the squads.
