Nagpur is widely recognised as the Orange City, the geographical centre of India and one of Maharashtra’s most strategically located cities. For decades, however, when people talked about Maharashtra’s technology sector, the conversation was dominated by Mumbai and Pune.
That could gradually begin to change.
With MIHAN, an established STPI presence, expanding infrastructure, educational institutions and increasing attention towards Artificial Intelligence and other emerging technologies, Nagpur has several building blocks that could support a larger technology ecosystem.

Nagpur’s objective should therefore not be to become the “next Bengaluru.”

There is reason for optimism, but there is also reason for caution.
Infrastructure announcements do not automatically create technology hubs.
Neither do political statements.
Successful technology ecosystems require sustained private investment, skilled talent, entrepreneurship, research, high-quality employment and years of consistent execution.
Nagpur therefore should not be prematurely marketed as an established AI or technology capital.
The more accurate description is that Nagpur has the foundations and potential to become a significantly larger technology centre.
Whether that potential becomes reality will depend on what happens next.

Yes, Nagpur has the potential — but the transformation is still in progress.

Nagpur’s strongest strategy may therefore not be to copy Bengaluru, Hyderabad or Pune.
Instead, it can build a distinctive technology economy combining Artificial Intelligence, IT services, logistics technology, aviation, advanced manufacturing, research and digital infrastructure.
If that happens, the question may eventually change from:
“Can Nagpur become a technology hub?”
to:
“How big can Nagpur’s technology economy become?”
For the moment, the opportunity is real — but execution will decide the outcome.
