India’s Trade Deficit Narrows in August, But Oil Could Quickly Change the Story

India’s latest trade figures offer a mixed but important message: the country’s merchandise trade deficit narrowed sharply in August, but the improvement may be vulnerable to a renewed rise in crude oil prices.

India’s merchandise trade deficit fell to $26.86 billion in August 2026, from about $31.98 billion in July. The improvement came as imports dropped substantially, particularly gold imports, while exports remained strong.

At first glance, that sounds like straightforward good news.

It isn’t quite that simple.

The August numbers show that India’s external trade position can improve when imports moderate and exports remain resilient. But they also expose a familiar vulnerability: India remains highly sensitive to international energy prices.

And this time, the warning light is coming from the Middle East.

A smaller trade gap—but why?

India exported goods worth $43.81 billion in August, slightly below July’s $44.24 billion but still the highest August export figure in a decade, according to Reuters’ report based on the latest trade data.

Imports, meanwhile, fell to $70.67 billion, from $76.22 billion in July.

That difference produces the merchandise trade deficit:

$70.67 billion − $43.81 billion = $26.86 billion.

So the headline improvement was not primarily the result of an extraordinary jump in August exports.

It was significantly an import story.

And one particular import category made a surprisingly large difference: gold.

Gold imports fell to approximately $2.3 billion, from $4.16 billion in July.

In other words, India’s trade mathematics got some help from a commodity that has nothing to do with crude oil, manufacturing capacity or software exports.

Gold simply bought less space on the import bill.

Exports are doing their part

There is nevertheless plenty of positive news on the export side.

India’s goods and services exports together reached $82.68 billion in August, about 25% higher than a year earlier, according to Reuters. Services exports alone were $38.87 billion, against services imports of $21.42 billion, producing a services surplus of $17.45 billion.

That services surplus is particularly important.

India’s international trade story is no longer simply about containers leaving ports loaded with manufactured goods.

A significant part of India’s export strength travels without a ship.

Software, business services, professional services and other digitally delivered services can generate foreign exchange without requiring imported crude oil, shipping containers or port capacity for every dollar earned.

This creates an interesting contrast.

India may run a sizeable deficit in merchandise trade while simultaneously maintaining a substantial surplus in services.

The two sides increasingly have to be viewed together.

The automobile and engineering story

There are also encouraging signs within merchandise exports.

Automobile exports rose 22.2% year-on-year to 681,000 units, with two- and three-wheelers providing important momentum. Passenger-vehicle exports, however, declined 17%, showing that the export picture is not uniformly strong across every automotive segment.

Engineering exports have also been resilient. July engineering exports had already grown 18% year-on-year to about $12.24 billion, according to data reported by the Engineering Export Promotion Council of India.

This matters because engineering goods represent precisely the kind of exports India needs to expand if it wants its trade improvement to become structural rather than temporary.

Selling more manufactured products overseas is fundamentally different from reducing the import bill because Indians bought less gold during one particular month.

The first represents productive export capacity.

The second represents a change in import demand.

India needs both, but the former is strategically more valuable.

Then comes the oil problem

Here is where the August trade improvement becomes less comfortable.

India imports a large proportion of the crude oil it consumes. Consequently, a sudden increase in international oil prices can quickly increase India’s import bill.

Reuters reported that India’s crude basket averaged around $90.19 per barrel in August and had risen to approximately $109.76 per barrel in September amid heightened geopolitical tensions and disruptions affecting oil supplies.

That is a substantial move.

The arithmetic is straightforward.

If India imports roughly the same quantity of crude but pays considerably more per barrel, the country can see billions of additional dollars added to its import bill.

And that is before considering the secondary effects.

More expensive oil can raise transportation costs.

Higher transportation costs can feed into logistics.

Higher logistics costs can affect manufacturers.

Manufacturers may then face higher production costs.

Eventually, consumers can feel the impact through prices.

The trade deficit, therefore, isn’t merely an economist’s number sitting inside a government spreadsheet.

It can eventually reach the fuel bill, transport cost and household budget.

The rupee connection

There is another reason the oil story deserves attention.

India generally needs foreign currency to pay for imported crude. If the dollar cost of energy imports rises sharply, demand for dollars can increase.

That can put pressure on the rupee.

Reuters reported that the rupee weakened to around ₹95.96 per US dollar on September 15, while Brent crude was above $108 a barrel. The combination of oil prices, inflation concerns and global monetary expectations was weighing on Indian financial markets.

This creates a potentially uncomfortable chain:

Higher oil → higher import bill → greater dollar demand → pressure on rupee → potentially higher imported inflation.

That does not mean every rise in crude automatically produces this exact sequence. Exchange rates are influenced by many factors.

But the vulnerability is real.

India’s unusual advantage: services

There is, however, a powerful buffer in India’s trade numbers.

That buffer is the services sector.

The $17.45-billion services surplus in August substantially offset the merchandise deficit.

This is one of the most important lessons hidden inside the latest trade release.

India does not have to eliminate its merchandise deficit overnight to strengthen its external position.

It can also increase high-value exports in sectors where India is globally competitive.

Technology and professional services are obvious examples.

But the longer-term opportunity is broader: engineering design, financial services, healthcare services, education, consulting, digital products and other knowledge-intensive exports can all contribute.

The less India’s export basket depends on a narrow group of goods, the more resilient the external sector becomes.

The DOONITED Editorial View: Don’t celebrate the deficit alone

There is a temptation in economic reporting to treat every smaller deficit as a victory.

That would be too simplistic.

August’s improvement deserves recognition, but the composition matters.

The deficit narrowed partly because imports fell—and gold imports almost halved from July. Meanwhile, crude prices are now moving sharply higher.

Therefore, the more important question is not:

“Did India’s trade deficit fall?”

It did.

The better question is:

“Can India keep narrowing the deficit while exports grow, even if energy prices remain elevated?”

That is the real test.

If engineering, electronics, automobiles, pharmaceuticals, textiles and other manufactured exports continue expanding while services remain strong, India’s trade position could become structurally healthier.

If, however, geopolitical tensions push oil sharply higher for a prolonged period, August’s improvement could prove temporary.

Economic statistics, unfortunately, do not come with a permanent guarantee.

What this means for ordinary Indians

For the average reader, the trade deficit may sound like something belonging exclusively to economists and government officials.

It isn’t.

The figures can eventually influence:

• Fuel prices
• Transport and logistics costs
• Inflation
• The rupee’s value
• Imported electronics and machinery
• Business input costs
• India’s overall external financial position

That makes export growth more than a national achievement.

It is also an economic cushion.

Every additional dollar earned through competitive Indian exports can help offset the dollars India needs to spend on imported energy, machinery, electronics and raw materials.

The bigger lesson

August’s trade numbers offer neither a reason for alarm nor an excuse for complacency.

They show an Indian economy with strong services exports, resilient merchandise exports and significant manufacturing potential, but also with a continuing dependence on imported energy.

The immediate challenge is geopolitical.

The long-term challenge is structural.

India cannot control the price of oil or every conflict affecting international shipping routes. What it can influence is the competitiveness of Indian companies, the diversity of export markets, the value added to Indian products and the efficiency of its logistics infrastructure.

That is where the real trade strategy lies.

And perhaps the simplest way to describe the August numbers is this:

India has reduced the size of the hole—but the price of filling it could still rise if oil keeps climbing.

For now, the trade story is encouraging.

The next few months will reveal whether it is durable.
