The Centre on Wednesday approved a one-year extension in the tenure of Praveen Sood as Director of the Central Bureau of Investigation. According to an order issued by the Personnel Ministry, Sood’s tenure has been extended for one year beyond May 24, 2026. The IPS officer had originally taken charge as CBI Director on May 25, 2023, for a fixed two-year term.
Last year, the government had already granted him a one-year extension, and the latest move will allow him to continue leading the country’s premier investigative agency for another year.
Officials said the decision was finalised after a meeting of the selection committee held on Tuesday at the Prime Minister’s residence.

Rahul Gandhi’s Dissent
The selection committee meeting was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Chief Justice of India Surya Kant and Rahul Gandhi in his capacity as Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha.
Sources said Rahul Gandhi expressed dissatisfaction with the process adopted for the extension and submitted a dissent note after the meeting. He reportedly stated that he did not wish to be part of what he described as a “biased exercise”.
The dissent has added a political dimension to the extension decision, especially as opposition parties have repeatedly accused central agencies of selective functioning and political targeting.
Despite the objections, the ACC formally cleared the extension based on the recommendations of the majority within the panel.
