Survivors' voices 'integral' to preventing terrorism | UN News

During the devastating November 26, 2008 terror attacks in Mumbai, Vishwas Nangre Patil was serving as the Deputy Commissioner of Police for Zone-1 (South Mumbai)
. His actions during the siege of the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel are widely recognized for their raw courage and critical impact.  Upon learning of the attacks, he was among the very first officers to arrive at the besieged hotel.

In a remarkable display of bravery, he led his team into the building through a rear entrance while facing heavy gunfire from the Pakistani terrorists, which included Ajmal Kasab. Notably, he engaged in this highly dangerous operation armed only with a service Glock pistol and was initially operating without a bulletproof vest. Inside the hotel, a fierce gunfight ensued.

Patil confronted the terrorists directly on the Royal Staircase, successfully hitting one of them in the leg and pinning the attackers down. This direct engagement had massive strategic importance; his swift and decisive actions successfully barricaded the terrorists from advancing into the Crystal Hall.

Because a marriage function was actively underway in the Crystal Hall at the time, his defensive stand is credited with saving hundreds of lives. Tragically, the intensity of this encounter resulted in the death of one of Patil’s bodyguards and left another injured.
