Desai Foundation’s Diwali on the Hudson Connects New York’s Indian Diaspora with Women’s Empowerment in Rural India

The foundation’s 13th annual New York gala brought together more than 400 supporters and announced a West Bengal expansion with Girl Rising. Its next challenge is translating fundraising, menstrual-health advocacy and a major Supreme Court ruling into measurable improvements for girls and women across India.

New York’s Diwali celebrations often bring together Indian music, food, fashion and community traditions. But the Desai Foundation’s 13th annual Diwali on the Hudson, held on October 22, 2026, used the festival for a purpose extending well beyond the city’s cultural calendar: mobilising support for women and children in rural India.

More than 400 people attended the event at HK Hall in Manhattan, according to the organisers. The gathering included philanthropists, entrepreneurs, artists and members of the Indian diaspora. Among those present were Grammy Award-winning musician Falu, Broadway actress Lauren Mariasoosay, beauty creator Arshia Moorjani and Vishal Moorjani, former senior adviser to US Vice President Kamala Harris Opal Vadhan, and Kunal Merchant of Indo Warehouse.

Senator Kirsten Gillibrand also sent a letter conveying Diwali wishes and recognising the Foundation’s work. The evening combined performances, food and networking with fundraising for programmes centred on health, livelihoods and menstrual equity in rural India.

The more significant announcements, however, concerned the organisation’s work on the ground.

From a diaspora gathering to a rural-development mission

Founded in 1997, the Desai Foundation works through community programmes intended to improve access to healthcare, livelihood opportunities and menstrual-health support. Its approach includes training local community workers, supporting women’s economic participation, conducting health camps and addressing the stigma surrounding menstruation.

The Foundation says its programmes have reached more than 13 million people across over 4,000 rural communities in eight Indian states. These are organisation-reported cumulative figures, rather than an independently verified count of unique beneficiaries. Its public-facing websites also display differing headline totals: the US event page continues to show 12 million-plus, while the India Trust website reports 13 million-plus. The milestone is therefore best understood as the Foundation’s latest reported impact figure.

Its programme statistics illustrate the range of interventions. The organisation reports that its Asani menstrual-equity initiative has produced millions of sanitary napkins through women-run production units and reached women with menstrual-health information and products. Its other activities include anaemia awareness and testing, health camps, vocational training and computer education.

The significance of this model lies partly in its local delivery. Community-based workers can help connect women and families with services and information in areas where access to formal healthcare, education and economic opportunities may be limited. However, the scale of reported reach must ultimately be assessed alongside programme quality, continuity and measurable outcomes.

West Bengal expansion brings a new partnership

One of the gala’s principal announcements was a partnership with Girl Rising, an organisation focused on girls’ education and empowerment. The Desai Foundation said the collaboration would support its expansion into West Bengal, taking its geographical presence to a ninth Indian state.

The proposed work links two closely connected challenges: keeping girls in education and ensuring that menstruation does not become a source of stigma, exclusion or avoidable absence from school.

Menstrual health is not simply a matter of distributing sanitary products. Girls also need accurate information, safe toilets, access to water, appropriate disposal facilities and an environment in which they can seek help without embarrassment. Families, teachers and communities have a role in changing attitudes that can restrict participation in education.

The Foundation described the partnership as a Clinton Global Initiative Commitment to Action. The announcement is significant, although detailed public information about the programme’s budget, school-level targets, implementation timetable and independent evaluation was not available in the material reviewed.

Supreme Court ruling raises the stakes for school implementation

The Foundation’s second major announcement concerned its intention to help thousands of schools put India’s new legal recognition of menstrual health into practice.

On January 30, 2026, the Supreme Court of India ruled in Jaya Thakur v. Government of India that menstrual health forms part of the right to life and dignity under Article 21. The Court issued directions requiring States and Union Territories to ensure functional gender-separated toilets, access to menstrual absorbents, safe disposal arrangements and menstrual-health support in schools, including private institutions.

The ruling was an important constitutional development. It recognised that inadequate menstrual-health facilities can obstruct girls’ education and equal participation.

The legal requirements have also evolved. In a subsequent order on September 1, 2026, the Supreme Court modified its earlier specification for sanitary napkins, replacing the oxo-biodegradable standard with biodegradable, biocompatible and compostable products complying with ISO 17088 and IS 5405. The Court also examined the progress reported by States and expressed concern that some compliance reporting was inadequate.

This makes the Foundation’s proposed school initiative particularly relevant. But implementation will require more than awareness campaigns. Schools need functioning infrastructure, dependable supplies, trained staff, safe waste management and monitoring that reflects girls’ actual experiences.

The responsibility for compliance rests with public authorities and the relevant education systems. A nonprofit can contribute through training, awareness, partnerships and practical support, but it cannot substitute for the State’s legal obligations.

A wider role for the Indian diaspora

For overseas Indians, Diwali on the Hudson illustrates how diaspora philanthropy can connect cultural identity with sustained engagement in India. The event provides a meeting point for professionals, entrepreneurs, artists and donors who may wish to contribute to development initiatives beyond occasional charitable giving.

It also demonstrates how cultural celebrations can create visibility for issues that receive less attention than headline-grabbing philanthropic causes. Menstrual health, school sanitation and women’s livelihood opportunities are everyday concerns, but they have long-term consequences for education, health and economic participation.

The real measure of this year’s announcements will not be the size of the New York gathering or the prominence of its guests. It will be whether the West Bengal partnership reaches girls who need support, whether school programmes improve access and dignity, and whether reported outcomes can be independently assessed.

The Desai Foundation’s Diwali message was built around the idea of light extending beyond a celebration. Turning that message into lasting change will depend on transparent reporting, sustained local partnerships and evidence that the programmes are making a practical difference in the lives of women and children in rural India.
