Take That Meets Shashwat Sachdev: Earthshot Brings British Pop and Indian Film Music to Mumbai

The Earthshot Prize’s 2026 Awards Night will bring British pop group Take That and Indian composer Shashwat Sachdev together in Mumbai. Beyond the star power, the event offers a glimpse of how international entertainment, Indian cultural influence and environmental innovation can share a global platform.

A Mumbai Stage with a Global Audience

When the Earthshot Prize holds its 2026 Awards Night in Mumbai on 17 November, the musical line-up will bring together two very different traditions: British chart pop and contemporary Indian film music.

Take That, the British trio comprising Gary Barlow, Mark Owen and Howard Donald, is scheduled to perform in India for the first time during the group’s 35-year history. Joining them is Indian composer and music producer Shashwat Sachdev, who will perform music from his catalogue Shades of Cashmere as part of the ceremony’s finale.

The event is part of the sixth annual edition of the environmental prize founded by Prince William in 2020. It will also feature Indian singer Shreya Ghoshal, with filmmaker Karan Johar hosting. Other announced participants include cricketer Sachin Tendulkar, actors Alia Bhatt, Sonam Kapoor, Rami Malek and Simone Ashley, and Earthshot ambassadors Robert Irwin and Nomzamo Mbatha.

The ceremony is expected to bring together around 5,000 guests in Mumbai, while Prime Video will carry the event internationally across more than 240 countries and territories in over 40 languages.

The combination is significant for more than its celebrity appeal. It places Indian music and entertainment at the centre of an international event designed to draw attention to environmental solutions.

Two Musical Worlds, One Platform

Take That emerged from Manchester in the late 1980s and became one of Britain’s most commercially successful pop groups. Following a split in the 1990s, the band reunited in 2006 and continued as a trio after Robbie Williams and Jason Orange departed.

Its Mumbai appearance will introduce the group’s live performance to an Indian audience in a new setting. The timing also coincides with the planned release of its album Dreamers on 20 November, three days after the ceremony.

Sachdev represents a different route to international reach. His work includes scores for Indian films such as Uri: The Surgical Strike and Dhurandhar, as well as collaboration with composer Hans Zimmer on the theme for the BBC series Virdee.

His planned Shades of Cashmere performance gives the event an Indian musical identity beyond the inclusion of Indian celebrities. Film music, with its blend of orchestration, regional influences and contemporary production, can travel across language barriers even when audiences do not know the films from which it originates.

The pairing is not evidence that musical styles or audiences will automatically merge. It does, however, create a shared stage where British pop and Indian cinematic sound can be experienced by a worldwide audience.

For Indian artists and the diaspora, that visibility matters. Cultural exchange increasingly takes place through global streaming platforms, touring, film soundtracks and international collaborations, rather than through a simple one-way export of culture.

Entertainment Meets Environmental Innovation

The Earthshot Prize was established to identify and support solutions addressing major environmental challenges. Its five award categories are Protect and Restore Nature, Clean Our Air, Revive Our Oceans, Build a Waste-Free World and Fix Our Climate.

At the Mumbai ceremony, five winners will each receive £1 million to help advance or scale their work.

The 2026 finalists include organisations and initiatives working on areas such as wildfire detection, heat resilience, landscape protection, waste reduction and cleaner industry. India is represented among the finalists, including Mahindra Last Mile Mobility in the Clean Our Air category and Mahila Housing Trust in Fix Our Climate.

This provides the event with a more substantive purpose than a conventional awards gala. Its environmental value depends on whether promising approaches can attract investment, partnerships, public attention and practical support.

A star performance can bring a large audience to an event. It cannot, by itself, reduce emissions, restore ecosystems or improve climate resilience. Those outcomes depend on the solutions being implemented, the evidence supporting them and the resources available to scale them.

The distinction is important because high-profile environmental events can sometimes place more emphasis on spectacle than on measurable results. The Earthshot Prize’s central proposition is that the finalists’ work should remain the focus, with entertainment helping to bring their achievements to a wider public.

Why the International Broadcast Matters

Prime Video’s role as the exclusive global streaming partner extends the ceremony beyond its Mumbai venue. The planned distribution across more than 240 countries and territories could introduce the finalists and their work to viewers who might not otherwise follow environmental innovation.

For overseas Indians, the event also creates a cultural connection across geographies. Indian music and film personalities will share an international platform with British performers and global environmental figures, while audiences abroad will be able to watch an event taking place in India.

That visibility can help position India not only as a large entertainment market, but also as a place where environmental innovation, investment and international collaboration are being discussed.

Yet reach should not be confused with impact. The number of countries able to stream the ceremony does not show how many viewers will engage with the finalists, invest in their solutions or change their behaviour. Those outcomes require separate evidence.

The Real Test Comes After the Applause

The Earthshot Prize’s Mumbai edition combines three forms of influence: environmental innovation, international entertainment and India’s cultural reach. Take That’s first Indian performance and Sachdev’s contribution to the finale provide a compelling illustration of how these worlds can meet.

The larger opportunity is to use that attention to make environmental solutions better understood and more widely supported. The strongest measure of success will not be the celebrity attendance or the scale of the broadcast alone, but whether the innovators recognised by the prize are better placed to expand their work.

On 17 November, Mumbai will host a global celebration built around the possibility of environmental progress. The music may bring audiences together for one evening. The lasting achievement will depend on whether the ideas at the centre of the event continue to gain momentum long after the stage lights go down.
