Jyotswaroop Kaur Takes the Helm of Sikh Coalition: A Punjab-Born Leader at the Forefront of Sikh Civil Rights in America

Her journey from Punjab to community leadership in California reflects a wider story of diaspora participation in public life. Now, she faces the task of strengthening an organisation working on the rights, security and representation of Sikhs across the United States.

A new chapter has begun for the Sikh Coalition, one of the most prominent Sikh civil rights organisations in the United States. On October 8, 2026, the organisation announced Jyotswaroop Kaur as its incoming Executive Director. She formally assumed the position on October 12, succeeding Harman Singh, who stepped down after five years with the organisation, including three as its Executive Director.

Her appointment is significant not simply as a leadership change within a community organisation. It brings a professional with extensive experience in immigrant advocacy, economic justice and grassroots mobilisation to the forefront of an organisation addressing some of the most consequential issues facing Sikh Americans.

Born in Punjab, Kaur moved to Southern California as a teenager. Her personal journey connects her Indian roots with the experience of growing up and building a professional career in the United States.

From community organising to national leadership

Kaur brings more than a decade of experience in community organising and policy advocacy, alongside a longer record of involvement in social justice campaigns.

Before joining the Sikh Coalition, she served as Chief of Organising and Campaigns at Rise Economy, where she worked on state-level policy campaigns, corporate accountability and coalition-building.

Earlier, she was Deputy Executive Director of the California Immigrant Policy Center, leading policy, government affairs and organising teams. She also served as Deputy Director at Strategic Actions for a Just Economy, an organisation associated with economic and housing justice campaigns.

Her work has included tenant rights, organising Sikh youth and advocating for immigrant survivors of domestic violence. These experiences are relevant to her new position because civil rights advocacy often requires more than legal intervention. It involves understanding how laws, public institutions, employers and local communities affect people’s everyday lives.

Kaur holds a master’s degree in Public Administration, specialising in Nonprofit Management and Policy, from New York University’s Wagner School of Public Service. She earned her bachelor’s degree in English from the University of California, Irvine.

She also serves on the Los Angeles County Human Relations Commission and is involved with nonprofit boards, including LA Voice and the Consumer Federation of California. Her connection with the Sikh community remains active through Sri Guru Singh Sabha in Walnut, California.

Why Sikh civil rights remain an important issue

The Sikh Coalition describes itself as the largest Sikh civil rights organisation in the United States. Its work spans legal assistance, education, policy advocacy and community development.

For Sikh Americans, religious identity can be visible in everyday life through articles of faith such as the turban, uncut hair and kara. That visibility can become a source of misunderstanding, discrimination or unequal treatment in schools, workplaces and public institutions.

The organisation’s work includes addressing religious accommodation, hate incidents, employment discrimination, bullying and the accurate representation of Sikh history and identity in education.

These issues are not merely symbolic. A student facing religious bullying, an employee denied an accommodation or a truck driver affected by a licensing rule may need practical legal and community support.

The Coalition’s work also extends to immigration and the treatment of Sikh migrants. Its advocacy has included support for detained individuals, immigration guidance and resources for families navigating enforcement-related uncertainty.

The trucking issue and immigration concerns

One of the most pressing challenges highlighted by the organisation’s outgoing leadership concerns Sikh truck drivers.

In his October 22, 2026 reflection, former Executive Director Harman Singh said the Coalition had filed legal briefs and advocated against federal rules that it believed threatened nearly 194,000 immigrant truckers. He also reported that its Punjabi-language trucker helpline had received more than 375 calls.

These figures are the organisation’s own reported advocacy and service figures; they should not be interpreted as an independently verified count of Sikh drivers or people who have lost licences.

The issue nevertheless illustrates how changes in employment and licensing rules can affect immigrant communities. For many families, commercial driving is a source of income and economic stability. Regulatory changes can therefore have consequences extending beyond individual drivers to household finances and local businesses.

The Coalition has also reported securing the release of Sikh detainees through its habeas work and publishing an Immigrant Family Preparedness Guide in English and Punjabi.

For Kaur, these are not abstract policy questions. They are areas where her previous experience in immigrant advocacy and organising could be particularly relevant.

Building on the organisation’s next chapter

The leadership transition follows a period in which the Sikh Coalition expanded its activities. Under Harman Singh, it developed work addressing alleged Indian transnational repression, increased attention to immigration and trucking issues, and launched initiatives including Takht, a Sikh political leadership programme, and the Sikh Speakers Network.

The organisation also awarded Sangat Seva Grants to 20 Sikh Student Associations and mobilised more than 100 advocates in Washington state, according to Harman’s account of the previous year.

Kaur inherits both this institutional foundation and the responsibility of deciding how the organisation should respond to emerging challenges.

Her experience in coalition-building may prove useful in connecting Sikh civil rights work with wider discussions on immigrant rights, religious freedom, economic opportunity and democratic participation. These are issues that often involve alliances with organisations beyond a single faith community.

A diaspora leadership story with wider significance

Kaur’s appointment reflects an important dimension of the Indian diaspora’s presence in the United States: participation in civic institutions and public policy, alongside achievements in business, science and technology.

Her journey from Punjab to leadership of a national civil rights organisation is also a reminder that diaspora influence is not measured only by corporate success or public recognition. It can also be expressed through the ability to organise communities, influence institutions and defend the rights of people who may not have access to power.

The test of her leadership will be practical: whether the Sikh Coalition can strengthen legal support, respond effectively to discrimination, protect vulnerable immigrant communities and ensure that younger generations can practise their faith without fear.

For Sikh Americans, and for the wider Indian-origin community, the appointment represents an opportunity to build on years of advocacy. The work ahead will require more than visibility. It will require sustained institutional strength, effective partnerships and measurable improvements in people’s everyday lives.
