Brian Lara’s Imran Khan Appeal: When Cricket’s Respect Crosses Political Borders
Cricket has always been more than a game in South Asia. It creates rivalries, national emotions and unforgettable sporting memories—but it can also create a shared language between people who otherwise stand on opposite sides of political boundaries.
That dimension returned to the spotlight on September 5, 2026, when West Indies cricket great Brian Lara publicly expressed concern about the treatment of former Pakistan captain and former prime minister Imran Khan, calling for proper medical care and dignity while Khan remains in prison.
Lara made his appeal through his official Instagram account. He recalled that he and Khan had crossed paths only a handful of times on the cricket field, but said the respect he developed for the former Pakistan captain was immediate and lasting.
The significance of the intervention lies not simply in the identity of the person speaking, but in the language he chose.
Lara deliberately separated his appeal from politics, describing the issue as one of basic humanity and asking that Khan receive independent medical care and the dignity due to every human being.
From cricket captain to political prisoner
Imran Khan occupies a unique place in Pakistan’s history.
Before entering politics, he became one of the most celebrated cricketers of his generation. As Pakistan’s captain, he led the country to its historic 1992 Cricket World Cup triumph, the achievement that remains central to his sporting legacy.
His life subsequently moved far beyond cricket. He founded the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf political party and eventually became Pakistan’s prime minister, serving from 2018 until 2022.
Since August 2023, however, Khan has remained imprisoned following convictions in a series of legal cases. Khan and his political supporters have repeatedly alleged that the cases are politically motivated, while Pakistani authorities have rejected that characterization.
That distinction is important. Allegations about political motivation should not automatically be presented as established fact.
What can be established is that Khan remains in custody and that his health has become a growing subject of public concern.
Why medical care has become the immediate issue
The controversy intensified around Khan’s eyesight and other health concerns.
According to Pakistani reporting, Khan has been dealing with right central retinal vein occlusion, an eye condition that became publicly known earlier this year. His supporters have questioned whether he has consistently received the specialist care they believe he requires.
There has also been a dispute over where he should receive treatment.
On August 18, Pakistan’s Supreme Court directed that Khan be moved to Shifa International Hospital in Islamabad for examination and treatment by a multidisciplinary medical board. Pakistani reports subsequently said he was taken instead to the government-run Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences. Questions were later raised about whether the facility had the equipment required for a recommended CT angiography examination.
Reuters separately reported that Khan was taken to hospital on August 21 but returned to prison after a relatively short examination, adding to the controversy surrounding his medical treatment.
These competing accounts demonstrate why the medical issue needs independent verification rather than political assumptions.
Lara is not the first cricket legend to speak
Lara’s intervention comes after other major figures from the cricket world expressed concern about Khan.
India’s Sunil Gavaskar and Kapil Dev, Australia’s Greg Chappell and other former international captains have been associated with calls for appropriate medical treatment and humane conditions for the former Pakistan captain. Australia captain Pat Cummins has also spoken about the importance of treating Khan with dignity.
According to Pakistani reporting, an appeal involving 22 international cricketers, including 21 former captains, was also made to Pakistan Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif regarding Khan’s medical treatment.
That does not establish a judgment on Khan’s political or legal cases.
It does, however, demonstrate that concern about the treatment of a former sporting icon has travelled beyond Pakistan’s political arena.
The larger lesson for cricket
For Indian readers, this story is particularly interesting because cricket has long provided one of the few spaces in which Indians and Pakistanis can share memories even when political relations are difficult.
Imran Khan’s cricket career is remembered in India as well as Pakistan. So are Lara’s extraordinary batting performances and his contribution to West Indies cricket.
That shared sporting history explains why an appeal from a West Indies legend can resonate across the region.
But there is another lesson.
A person’s sporting achievements do not place them above the law. At the same time, imprisonment does not remove a person’s basic entitlement to appropriate medical attention and humane treatment.
Those two principles can—and should—exist together.
The DOONITED perspective
Brian Lara’s intervention should therefore not be read as an endorsement of Imran Khan’s political positions, nor as a verdict on the criminal cases against him.
It is better understood as a sportsman’s appeal for humane treatment of another sportsman.
That distinction matters.
Cricket has produced many fierce rivalries, but some of its strongest traditions are built around respect for opponents. Lara’s message brings that sporting principle into an uncomfortable real-world situation.
Whether one supports Imran Khan politically or disagrees with him, the question of adequate medical care should be capable of being considered separately from political loyalty.
That may be the most meaningful message emerging from this unusual moment in international cricket: competition can divide countries, politics can divide societies, but respect for human dignity should not require a team jersey.
