Leicester Diwali 2026: Aakash Odedra Leads a British South Asian Cultural Spectacle Blending Indian Dance and Live Orchestra

Leicester is preparing to give its Diwali celebrations a distinctive artistic identity this year. On Sunday, November 8, 2026, the city’s main festival programme will culminate in a collaborative stage production led by the Aakash Odedra Company, bringing together Bollywood dance, theatre and live orchestral music.

The performance will feature Bollywood dance from Shiamak, theatrical elements from Red Lotus and music from the Philharmonia Orchestra. An aerial performance by suspended acrobat installation Heliosphere, followed by a laser show, will complete the evening.

The production is a first for Leicester’s 2026 Diwali programme and reflects the city’s growing emphasis on presenting South Asian cultural heritage through contemporary, collaborative performance.

For Britain’s Indian diaspora, the event has significance beyond a festival entertainment programme. It places British South Asian artistic talent, Indian dance traditions and international orchestral music at the centre of one of the country’s most prominent public Diwali celebrations.

Aakash Odedra: connecting Indian dance with contemporary Britain

At the centre of the production is choreographer and performer Aakash Odedra, whose career has developed through a combination of classical Indian dance training and contemporary international performance.

Born in Birmingham, Odedra trained in Kathak and Bharatanatyam in the United Kingdom and India. As a teenager, he moved to Mumbai to study with renowned Bollywood choreographer Shiamak Davar. That experience became an important part of his artistic development.

Founded in Leicester in 2011 by Anand Bhatt and Aakash Odedra, the Aakash Odedra Company has developed a reputation for productions that combine Indian movement traditions with contemporary choreography and cross-cultural storytelling. Its performances have travelled internationally, reaching audiences in numerous countries.

Odedra’s achievements include the Bessie Award in New York, a Dora performance award in Canada and a British Empire Medal for services to dance. His work has also received recognition at the Edinburgh International Festival.

His role in Leicester’s Diwali finale brings this international artistic experience back to the city where his company was established. The collaboration with Shiamak is particularly meaningful because Davar was one of the influential teachers in Odedra’s early career.

Four creative traditions on one stage

The new production brings together different artistic disciplines rather than relying on a conventional sequence of festival performances.

Shiamak contributes Bollywood dance, a popular performance tradition that has helped introduce Indian movement and music to audiences around the world. Red Lotus brings theatrical elements, while the Philharmonia Orchestra provides the live musical dimension.

This combination creates an opportunity to present Indian cultural influences through a wider performing-arts language. It also reflects how British South Asian artists increasingly work across classical, contemporary and popular traditions rather than being confined to a single cultural category.

The Philharmonia’s participation adds another dimension. A live orchestra in a Diwali celebration creates a meeting point between large-scale Western orchestral performance and South Asian dance and theatre.

The evening will continue with Heliosphere, a suspended aerial acrobatic installation, and a laser display. The combination of movement, music, aerial performance and light is intended to provide a distinctive finale for the city’s festival audience.

Why Leicester has redesigned its Diwali celebrations

Leicester’s Diwali celebrations are among the largest outside India, attracting visitors to the city’s Golden Mile, particularly Belgrave Road. The area is known for its Indian businesses, restaurants, jewellery shops, sari stores and festive illuminations.

However, crowd management has become an important issue for organisers. In 2025, Leicester City Council scaled back the traditional programme following serious public-safety concerns raised by the city’s Safety Advisory Group. Stage entertainment and public fireworks were removed, while the celebrations focused more heavily on the illuminated Golden Mile and its businesses.

The council announced in May 2026 that cultural activities would return to Cossington Recreation Ground, subject to the necessary event-management and safety arrangements. The park’s return is intended to provide a dedicated space for entertainment, food stalls, a funfair and community activities, while reducing pressure on nearby roads.

The 2026 programme retains the Golden Mile’s traditional lights and the popular Wheel of Light. The main stage and Diwali Village will be based at Cossington Street Recreation Ground.

There will be no public fireworks display this year. Instead, the aerial performance and laser show will provide the evening’s visual finale. This is an important change: the city is seeking to preserve the scale and atmosphere of its celebration while responding to the practical demands of crowd safety.

More than a festival: a reflection of British Indian identity

Leicester’s Diwali celebrations are significant because they bring together religious traditions, family gatherings, commerce, public entertainment and the wider community.

The city’s programme extends beyond the main stage. The Golden Mile will remain a major attraction, while the Har Har Rangoli exhibition at Belgrave Neighbourhood Centre on November 7 and 8 will showcase traditional rangoli artwork. The Diwali Village will offer South Asian food and drink, alongside family entertainment and a funfair.

For the Indian-origin community, these celebrations provide a public space in which heritage is shared across generations. For other residents and visitors, they offer an opportunity to experience Indian traditions as part of Leicester’s wider civic and cultural life.

The involvement of a Leicester-founded dance company with an international reputation also demonstrates how diaspora creativity can move beyond cultural preservation into artistic innovation.

Leicester’s 2026 Diwali celebration is therefore about more than replacing fireworks with lasers or adding an orchestra to a dance performance. It is an example of a British city using its South Asian heritage to create a contemporary cultural event—one that connects Indian artistic traditions with the evolving identity of modern Britain.
