From the UAE to India: Know India Programme Opens a Two-Week Journey for Young Indian Diaspora Professionals

For a young Indian-origin professional growing up or building a career in the United Arab Emirates, India can sometimes become an idea before it becomes a lived experience.

There may be family stories, festivals, food, films, social media and frequent conversations about the country. But experiencing India as a rapidly changing economy, a technological power, a democratic system and a society balancing ancient traditions with modern ambitions is something else entirely.

That is the idea behind the Know India Programme (KIP), a flagship initiative of India’s Ministry of External Affairs.

And in October 2026, the programme is offering another small group of young members of the Indian diaspora an unusually concentrated introduction to contemporary India.

The 90th edition of KIP will be held from 18 to 31 October 2026 and is specifically designed for the Young Professionals cohort, aged 24–28. The programme has been restructured so that Young Professionals and Scholars & Innovators have separate editions, with each edition limited to 25 participants.

For Indian-origin youth in the UAE, that makes the opportunity particularly relevant.

What Is the Know India Programme?

KIP was launched in 2003–04 as a government initiative to strengthen the connection between India’s diaspora youth and their ancestral country.

The programme has evolved considerably.

The current framework is designed not merely as a heritage tour, but as an orientation to contemporary India—including its economy, governance, culture, scientific and technological development, innovation ecosystem and changing global role.

The Ministry’s programme description includes exposure to democratic and governance institutions, historical and cultural locations, scientific and research institutions, universities, industry and India’s manufacturing and services sectors. Participants can also encounter government initiatives and developments in areas such as digital technology, skills, entrepreneurship and innovation.

In other words, this is not quite the traditional family holiday.

There may be monuments and museums.

But there can also be laboratories, companies, universities and government institutions.

India gets to introduce itself without relying entirely on the family WhatsApp group.

The 90th Edition Is for Young Professionals

One of the most important details for prospective applicants is the age structure.

Under the revised KIP guidelines, participants are divided into two groups:

Scholars & Innovators: 18–23 years

Young Professionals: 24–28 years

Each cohort receives separate programme editions, with 25 participants per edition. The programme lasts two weeks, including travel time.

The 90th edition from 18–31 October 2026 is for the 24–28 Young Professionals group.

This makes the programme particularly interesting for young people who have already entered university, professional life or entrepreneurship and are capable of looking at India not only through the lens of ancestry but also through the lens of opportunity.

Who Can Apply?

The revised programme is open to young people of Indian origin, including:

  • Persons of Indian Origin (PIOs)
  • Overseas Citizens of India (OCIs)
  • Non-Resident Indians (NRIs)

The guidelines give preference to applicants who have never previously visited India.

There is also particular preference for NRIs residing in the Gulf region, which is directly relevant to applicants in the UAE and other Gulf countries.

Applicants of PIO background are required to provide appropriate documentary evidence of Indian origin. The published guidelines also provide a mechanism for applicants who do not possess conventional documentary proof to submit an undertaking regarding their Indian origin, subject to authentication by the relevant Indian Mission or Post.

That is an important practical point.

Applicants should not wait until the last minute to discover that their connection to India is well known within the family but poorly documented on paper.

What Does the Programme Actually Offer?

The government describes KIP as a fully supported orientation and engagement programme.

For selected participants, the programme provides board and lodging in India and local transportation, while the international airfare is supported at 90% of the cost, subject to the programme’s applicable conditions. A free/gratis visa is also provided through the Indian Mission or Post.

However, “government-funded” does not mean participants can simply arrive at the airport with a suitcase and no responsibilities.

Participants must have comprehensive international travel and medical insurance covering the entire stay in India.

And after completing the programme, participants are required to submit a 750–1,000-word programme report describing their experiences, insights and understanding gained during KIP. Certificates are issued upon successful completion.

So there is a small assignment hiding at the end of the adventure.

India Beyond the Tourist Brochure

The programme’s real value lies in its breadth.

Participants can be introduced to India’s:

Governance and democracy — through exposure to institutions and India’s political and administrative architecture.

Culture and heritage — through historical places, traditional arts and cultural programmes.

Science and technology — through visits and interactions involving scientific and research institutions.

Education — through universities, colleges and interactions with students and faculty.

Industry — through exposure to India’s manufacturing and services sectors.

Innovation and entrepreneurship — including India’s start-up ecosystem and contemporary economic transformation.

States and communities — with the programme including visits to one or more Indian states and opportunities to see India beyond major metropolitan centres.

This mixture is deliberate.

A young Indian-origin professional living in Dubai or Abu Dhabi might know Mumbai from family visits, Delhi from news reports and Kerala or Punjab from relatives.

KIP attempts to add another layer:

India as a country being experienced rather than merely remembered.

Why the UAE Cohort Matters

The UAE has one of the world’s largest Indian-origin communities, making the Gulf an important constituency for India’s diaspora engagement.

The revised KIP guidelines specifically give preference to NRIs living in Gulf countries.

For a young professional in the UAE, the programme can potentially create three different connections.

The first is cultural—understanding heritage beyond festivals and family traditions.

The second is professional—seeing India’s industries, universities, start-ups and technology ecosystem.

The third is personal—forming a more direct relationship with a country that may have been part of their identity without necessarily being part of their everyday life.

That third element is perhaps the hardest one to measure.

And arguably the most valuable.

How UAE Applicants Can Apply

The latest public information from the Embassy of India in Abu Dhabi says the 90th KIP is open to PIOs, OCIs and NRIs aged 24–28, with applications closing on 28 September 2026. The Embassy has directed interested applicants to contact the Mission for registration information.

Applicants should prepare their documentation well before the deadline.

Typical supporting material includes:

  • Completed application form
  • Passport
  • Recent passport photograph
  • Educational qualification documents
  • PIO/OCI documentation or applicable NRI documentation
  • Other documents requested under the KIP guidelines

Different Indian Missions may publish specific submission instructions and contact details, so applicants should use the latest announcement from the Indian Embassy or Mission responsible for their place of residence, rather than relying on an old KIP application form or an unofficial social-media post.

Ministry of External Affairs — Know India Programme

A Small Programme With a Bigger Idea

Twenty-five people is not a large number.

That is precisely why the programme can potentially work differently from mass tourism.

A group of 25 can interact with institutions, ask questions, meet officials, visit companies and spend time understanding places rather than simply photographing them.

And there is a larger idea underneath the itinerary.

India’s diaspora is not simply an audience living outside the country.

It is also a potential bridge between India and the world.

A young professional who understands India’s technology sector, manufacturing ambitions, cultural diversity and economic transformation firsthand may subsequently become a business partner, researcher, entrepreneur, investor, professional collaborator—or simply a better-informed member of the global Indian community.

That outcome cannot be guaranteed.

But the opportunity to build the understanding is real.

DOONITED EDITORIAL PERSPECTIVE

The strongest feature of KIP is arguably not the free accommodation or subsidised airfare.

It is context.

Young diaspora Indians often encounter two very different versions of India: the India preserved in family memory and the India presented through today’s headlines.

Neither is necessarily the whole picture.

A two-week immersion cannot explain a country of India’s size and complexity. It cannot turn someone into an India expert. And a carefully designed government itinerary will inevitably show selected aspects of the country rather than every contradiction within it.

But that is not a weakness unique to KIP.

Every first visit is selective.

The meaningful question is whether the programme encourages participants to return home with more questions, more understanding and a more contemporary picture of India than they had before.

If it does, the programme has achieved something considerably more valuable than a sightseeing trip.

The Learning Point

For eligible young Indian-origin professionals in the UAE, the 90th KIP represents an opportunity to experience India at the intersection of heritage, technology, business, governance and social change.

The important lesson is that diaspora identity does not have to remain inherited.

It can also be explored.

Sometimes the best way to understand where your family came from is to see where that country is going.
