Indians in Canada: From Immigration Story to Economic and Cultural Powerhouse

Today, that description is far too small.

From doctors and technology professionals to entrepreneurs, students, researchers and business leaders, the Indian community has become deeply woven into Canada’s economic and social landscape.

And the relationship is evolving again.

The latest evidence suggests that the India–Canada connection is no longer simply about Indians moving to Canada.

It is increasingly about businesses moving capital, companies creating jobs, professionals transferring skills and two economies building commercial links around one of the world’s largest Indian-origin communities.

That is a considerably bigger story.

How large is the Indian community?

The Global Indian estimates that the Indian-origin population in Canada is approaching 2 million in 2026.

But the number needs some careful explanation.

The latest official Canadian census counted 1.347 million people reporting Indian ethnic or cultural origin in 2021, representing 3.7% of the population measured in that census table. Meanwhile, Statistics Canada counted 2.57 million South Asians, or 7.1% of Canada’s population.

The Canadian government now describes the community more broadly as more than 1.8 million Canadians of Indian origin.

So the safest conclusion is not to argue about whether the number is exactly 1.8 or 2 million.

The important fact is that the Indian-origin population has become one of Canada’s most significant immigrant and diaspora communities.

And it continues to grow.

India remains central to Canada’s immigration story

India has been Canada’s largest source country across several immigration categories.

The Canadian government says India was the country’s largest source for most immigration categories and that 392,810 Canadian study-permit holders were Indian citizens in 2024.

That tells us something important about the community.

It is not a single-generation diaspora.

There are established families whose roots in Canada go back decades, second-generation Canadians born there, recent permanent residents, international students and highly skilled professionals.

In other words, the Indian community in Canada is increasingly a society within Canadian society, rather than simply a group of newcomers.

Toronto, Brampton and Vancouver—but not only them

Ontario remains the heart of the community, while British Columbia has another major concentration.

The Greater Toronto Area and Metro Vancouver have become especially important centres of Indian-origin business, culture and community life.

But the Indian economic footprint extends considerably further.

Indian companies now have operations across much of Canada.

And this is where the story gets particularly interesting.

There was a time when the story of Indians in Canada was largely a story of migration. But..

The latest CII–CIBC “From India to Canada: Economic Impact and Engagement” report, released in 2026, examined the Canadian footprint of Indian companies.

Nearly 50 Indian companies covered by the survey have invested close to CAD $11 billion in Canada and generated more than 33,000 jobs. Their presence extends across eight of Canada’s ten provinces.

Even more revealing is the sectoral change.

Indian business activity is no longer dominated simply by information technology.

The 2026 report says IT and telecommunications, life sciences/pharmaceuticals/healthcare, and manufacturing/engineering each account for roughly a quarter of the main sector categories represented among Indian companies operating in Canada. Other areas include energy, financial services, food and retail, and mining.

That is a sign of economic maturity.

An immigrant community sending money home is one thing.

Companies from that community investing billions and employing tens of thousands of people is something else entirely.

The investment story works in both directions

The India–Canada economic relationship is becoming more complicated—and potentially more valuable—than the old immigration narrative suggests.

In 2025, bilateral merchandise trade reached CAD $10.9 billion, according to Canada’s Global Affairs department.

Canadian exports to India were CAD $3.9 billion, while imports from India reached CAD $7 billion.

Canada also recorded CAD $15.6 billion in services exports to India in 2024, driven primarily by education-related travel.

And both governments are now trying to expand the commercial relationship.

In 2026, India and Canada launched negotiations toward a Comprehensive Economic Partnership Agreement, with the stated objective of concluding negotiations by the end of the year.

If successful, such an agreement could affect goods, services, investment, agriculture, digital trade and mobility.

The diaspora could become one of the most useful bridges connecting these markets.

Students are important—but the story should not stop there

Indian students have been a major part of Canada’s international education ecosystem.

But there is a broader lesson.

A student who arrives in Canada is not simply a tuition-paying international student.

That person can eventually become a researcher, doctor, engineer, entrepreneur, employer, investor or community leader.

Equally, however, Canada has been changing its immigration and international-education policies, and Indian applicants have faced a more complicated environment than during the period of rapid expansion.

That reality deserves acknowledgement.

A mature India–Canada relationship cannot be built on an assumption that immigration will increase forever.

It has to work even when migration policies change.

The community is also a cultural bridge

The economic contribution is only half the story.

Indian food, Punjabi music, Bollywood, cricket, Diwali, Vaisakhi, yoga and Indian languages have become familiar parts of Canada’s multicultural landscape.

And the community itself is extraordinarily diverse.

Statistics Canada found that South Asian populations in Canada include people with roots across India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Bangladesh and many other places, while nearly three in ten South Asians were Canadian-born in the 2021 Census.

That means the phrase “Indian community” can sometimes hide an important reality:

There isn’t one Indian-Canadian experience.

A second-generation Canadian whose grandparents arrived from Punjab may have a very different relationship with India from a software engineer who arrived from Bengaluru five years ago.

Both, however, are part of the larger story.

From people-to-people ties to business-to-business ties

The most encouraging development may be the growing overlap between diaspora networks and commercial diplomacy.

In May 2026, India’s Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal led the largest Indian business delegation ever sent abroad, with more than 120 companies participating in Canada-focused engagement. India and Canada also launched a Trade and Investment Forum to deepen commercial connections.

This matters because diaspora networks can reduce one of the biggest costs in international business:

not knowing whom to call.

An Indian entrepreneur entering Canada may already understand the market through family, professional networks or community contacts.

A Canadian company entering India can similarly benefit from people who understand both business environments.

That is not sentimental diplomacy.

It is practical economics.

But success should not hide the difficult issues

India–Canada relations have experienced serious political and diplomatic tensions in recent years.

Those disagreements affected diplomatic operations and created uncertainty around parts of the bilateral relationship.

The current reopening of economic engagement therefore deserves cautious optimism rather than triumphalism.

Business relationships can recover faster than political trust—but they cannot completely ignore it.

The sensible approach is to separate legitimate disagreements from the broader economic and people-to-people relationship.

India and Canada have substantial reasons to cooperate in areas such as technology, critical minerals, clean energy, education, advanced manufacturing, agriculture and artificial intelligence. Canada’s government itself identifies several of these as areas of commercial opportunity.

DOONITED Editorial Perspective

The most interesting change in the Indian-Canadian story is that the diaspora is no longer simply the bridge between two countries.

Increasingly, it is becoming part of the economic infrastructure connecting them.

The old story was:

India sends people to Canada.

The emerging story is:

People, capital, companies, skills, technology and ideas move in both directions.

That is a much healthier model.

Canada benefits from Indian talent, entrepreneurship and investment.

India benefits from a globally connected diaspora that understands one of the world’s advanced economies.

But there is a warning for both countries.

India should not view Canada simply as a destination for its young people.

Canada should not view India simply as a source of immigrants or international students.

Both countries are much bigger than that.

The next chapter should be about trade, technology, investment, research, skills and innovation.

And perhaps that is the real measure of how far the Indian community in Canada has travelled.

A century ago, the question was whether Indians would be allowed to build a life in Canada.

Today, the more interesting question is:

How much more can Indians in Canada help build—both for Canada and for India?

The answer may be worth billions of dollars, tens of thousands of jobs, and a relationship that extends far beyond immigration.

The diaspora is no longer just part of the India–Canada story. It is increasingly one of the forces writing it.
